interview with dr. lowly

Dr. Lowly, your journey from medicine to art is quite unique. What inspired you to transition from a successful career in healthtech to becoming a full-time artist during your retirement?

Art has always been my childhood passion. I vividly remember winning an art contest at the age of 8, which fueled my love for creativity. Throughout school, I actively participated in the Art Club, nurturing this interest. However, financial constraints led me to pursue a career in medicine, becoming a medical doctor. While serving in a government hospital, I faced financial challenges and supplemented my income through home-based typing services. This unexpected venture introduced me to the world of computers and IT. Inspired by the potential of technology, I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, building a network of 2000 clinics across Singapore. This health technology venture spanned 25 years, culminating in the successful sale of my business to a Swedish buyer. In 2019, I retired and finally had the opportunity to revisit my childhood passion for painting. The onset of the Covid pandemic confined me to my home, providing the perfect moment to immerse myself in art. This period rekindled my love for painting, and I explored various techniques. Ultimately, I fell in love with abstract art, finding it therapeutic, enjoyable, and liberating.

Can you tell us more about your signature technique, “squeeze and splatter”? How did you develop this method, and what does it represent in your artistic expression?

When I embarked on my artistic journey, I found myself starting from scratch. The canvas awaited me, blank and full of potential. The first decision I grappled with was choosing the right type of paint. Oil or acrylic? My medical background led me to opt for acrylic paint due to its non-toxic nature—a choice that resonated with my commitment to health. My experimentation knew no bounds. Brushes, palettes, balloons, and even unconventional tools like spoons, forks, and yes, a toilet brush—all became my companions in this artistic exploration. I delved into the fluidity of acrylic paints, discovering their captivating flow. Syringes allowed me to inject creativity onto the canvas, while blowing paint through hospital drip tubing became an intriguing experiment. Yet, something was missing. The traditional methods felt stifling, and the results didn’t quite capture the vibrancy I sought. Then came the breakthrough: squeeze bottles. With newfound enthusiasm, I began to splatter and squeeze paint onto large canvases. The rhythmic motion—swinging the squeeze bottle from shoulder to wrist—created a dance of colors. Paints scattered, collided, and merged, infusing the canvas with energy and movement. This became my signature technique—the “squeeze and splatter.” Friends who witnessed my vibrant artworks praised the technique’s liveliness. Hours of practice refined my skill, and with each squeeze, I felt exhilaration and liberation. The midair descent of paint, guided by intuition, transformed the canvas into a testament of resilience, hope, and connection.

Nature seems to play a significant role in your work. How have your travels and experiences with different natural landscapes influenced your artistic style and themes?

Nature has always been a profound source of inspiration for me. I believe that God, the ultimate creator, has made all things beautiful—from the vast sky and vibrant rainbows to majestic mountains, deep valleys, cascading waterfalls, and blooming florals. This divine artistry is a constant reminder of the beauty that surrounds us. My travels have allowed me to witness these wonders firsthand. Each landscape, whether it’s the serene glaciers of El Calafate, the wild savannas of Botswana, the thunderous Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, the rich cultural tapestry of the Himba tribe in Namibia, or the lush forests of Costa Rica, has left an indelible mark on my soul. These experiences have profoundly influenced my artistic style and themes. The colors, textures, and forms found in nature are reflected in my work. I strive to capture the essence of these landscapes—their energy, their tranquility, and their inherent beauty. My “squeeze and splatter” technique, with its dynamic and fluid movements, mirrors the natural world’s spontaneity and vibrancy.Through my art, I aim to convey the awe and wonder I feel when immersed in nature. Each piece is a tribute to the Creator’s masterpiece, a celebration of the world’s natural beauty, and an invitation for viewers to pause and appreciate the splendor that surrounds us.

Your work aims to capture "ephemeral beauty and enduring hope." How do you approach translating these abstract concepts into tangible pieces of art?

Translating the abstract concepts of “ephemeral beauty and enduring hope” into tangible art is a deeply personal and reflective process for me. Nature serves as my primary muse, offering countless examples of fleeting beauty and the promise of renewal. Consider the delicate beauty of flowers. They bloom in vibrant colors, captivating us with their grace, yet their splendor is short-lived. Similarly, a beautiful day often begins with a brilliant, radiant sunrise, only to end in the darkness of night. These moments of transient beauty remind us of life’s impermanence.
However, within this cycle lies a profound message of hope. Each sunset, though it marks the end of a day, also heralds the promise of a new dawn. This cyclical nature of day and night, of blooming and withering, speaks to the enduring hope that life continually offers us new beginnings. In my art, I strive to capture these fleeting moments of beauty and the underlying promise of renewal. Through my “squeeze and splatter” technique, I create dynamic and vibrant compositions that reflect the spontaneity and energy of nature. The fluid movements and interplay of colors on the canvas evoke the transient beauty of a sunset or a blooming flower. At the same time, I infuse my work with a sense of hope and continuity. The layers of paint, the rhythmic patterns, and the harmonious color palettes allude to the eternal cycle of life and the enduring spirit of hope. Each piece becomes a visual narrative, celebrating the ephemeral beauty of the present moment while also conveying a sense of optimism for the future. Ultimately, my art is a reflection of my belief in the beauty of life’s fleeting moments and the enduring hope that sustains us through the cycles of change. It is a reminder that even in the face of impermanence, there is always the promise of a new day, a new beginning, and the eternal beauty of creation.

You've mentioned that your art provides a sanctuary in a world dominated by screens and materialism. Can you elaborate on how you hope your art impacts viewers and offers them moments of reflection and optimism?

In today’s world, people are increasingly glued to their TVs, computers, and cell phones. This constant engagement with screens often takes away from interpersonal relationships and precious moments of self-reflection. My art aims to counteract this trend by offering a sanctuary—a space where viewers can disconnect from the digital noise and reconnect with their inner selves. As Wassily Kandinsky once said, “Color is a power that directly influences the soul.” I believe that art, with its vibrant colors and dynamic forms, has the unique ability to touch the soul and evoke deep emotions. Similarly, Vincent van Gogh spoke of dreaming and painting those dreams. Art allows us to transcend the mundane and enter a realm of imagination and possibility. Through my work, I hope to provide viewers with moments of reflection and optimism. The colors and compositions I use are intended to evoke a sense of peace, joy, and wonder. I want my art to be a visual retreat, where people can pause, breathe, and reflect on the beauty and complexity of life. In a world dominated by materialism, my art serves as a reminder of the intangible—emotions, dreams, and the human spirit. By engaging with my paintings, I hope viewers can find a moment of respite, a spark of inspiration, and a renewed sense of hope. My goal is to create pieces that not only please the eye but also nourish the soul, encouraging people to dream and to see the world with fresh, optimistic eyes.

Ultimately, my art is a reflection of my belief in the beauty of life’s fleeting moments and the enduring hope that sustains us through the cycles of change. It is a reminder that even in the face of impermanence, there is always the promise of a new day, a new beginning, and the eternal beauty of creation.

Coming from a background in medicine and entrepreneurship, how have your previous experiences shaped your approach to art and creativity?

My journey through medicine and entrepreneurship has profoundly shaped my approach to art and creativity. Both fields, though seemingly different, share a common thread: the pursuit of dreams, creativity, and innovation. Entrepreneurship is fundamentally about dreaming and turning those dreams into reality. It’s about creativity, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of new ideas. This mindset has seamlessly transitioned into my art. Just as I once built a business from the ground up, I now build my artistic vision on canvas. The entrepreneurial spirit is addictive, and art provides a similar thrill. I dream in colors and beauty, and I paint those dreams into existence. Medicine, on the other hand, is about the dream to heal and the science behind it. There’s a profound connection between the science of healing and the science of art. For instance, color theory in art is as intricate and fascinating as any medical concept. My medical background has instilled in me a deep appreciation for exploration, creativity, and innovation. These principles guide my artistic process, allowing me to experiment and push boundaries. Just as medicine heals the body, art has the power to heal the mind and soul. It offers a sanctuary, a place for reflection, and a means to process emotions. In essence, my previous experiences have equipped me with the tools to pursue my dreams and creativity, now expressed through art. The discipline, innovation, and passion that drove my medical and entrepreneurial careers continue to fuel my artistic journey. I dream, I create, and I bring those dreams to life on canvas.

How did the Covid pandemic influence your artistic practice, and what changes, if any, did it bring to your work and creative process?

The onset of the Covid pandemic arrived just as I had sold my business and entered retirement. It was a serendipitous alignment—a moment when life’s unexpected twists intersected with my artistic aspirations. Before the pandemic, my wife and I were avid travelers. We explored countless countries, soaking in the beauty of scenes like the autumn landscapes, glaciers in Argentina, and iconic landmarks such as the Pyramids and the Eiffel Tower. But then, the world stood still. Flights were grounded, borders closed, and our physical wanderlust came to an abrupt halt. Yet, within this confinement, a new horizon opened. My canvas became my passport. Unable to traverse the globe physically, I embarked on a vibrant journey through color and form. Each stroke carried me to those distant places we once visited—the sun-kissed sands of Egypt, the wrought iron elegance of Paris, and beyond. The pandemic’s uncertainties fueled my creativity. I channeled hope, resilience, and connection onto the canvas. The vibrant hues danced, capturing memories and emotions. In my studio, I soared—unfettered by travel restrictions, guided only by the brush’s whisper.
As the world grappled with challenges, my art became a sanctuary. It allowed me to revisit those cherished scenes, infusing them with newfound depth. The Pyramids stood tall, not in stone, but in the luminous cadence of acrylics. The Eiffel Tower shimmered, not in steel, but in the rhythm of my brush. And so, I painted—a traveler without a suitcase, a wanderer within four walls. The pandemic may have grounded us, but it couldn’t tether our imaginations. Through vibrant colors, I rekindled the beauty, the joy, and the happiness of our shared adventures.

Your exhibitions have been held in various international locations. How has the reception of your art differed across these venues, and what has been the most rewarding aspect of sharing your work globally?

Exhibiting my art in different international locations has been an enlightening experience. Each art gallery, influenced by its unique cultural context and the mindset of its curators, perceives and appreciates art differently. This diversity in reception has enriched my understanding of how art can resonate across various cultures. In some venues, the vibrant colors and dynamic forms of my work have been celebrated for their energy and emotional depth. In others, the focus has been on the innovative techniques and the underlying themes of hope and resilience. This varied reception has allowed me to see my art through multiple lenses, each adding a new dimension to my creative journey. One of the most thrilling aspects of this journey has been the acceptance of my art by prestigious galleries. Each time a gallery chooses to exhibit my work, it feels like a validation of my artistic vision. Winning several awards and receiving recognition in these international settings has been incredibly rewarding. It not only affirms the value of my work but also motivates me to continue exploring and pushing the boundaries of my creativity. Sharing my art globally has also provided me with the opportunity to connect with a diverse audience. Hearing how my work resonates with people from different backgrounds and cultures is profoundly fulfilling. It reinforces the universal language of art and its ability to bridge gaps and foster understanding. Ultimately, the most rewarding aspect of sharing my work globally is the realization that art can transcend borders and touch lives in meaningful ways. It’s a reminder that despite our differences, we all share a common humanity, and through art, we can celebrate that connection.

As an autodidact artist, what challenges have you faced in your artistic journey, and how have you overcome them?

As a self-taught artist, one of the initial challenges I faced was the perception within the art community, especially in Asia, where galleries often associate an artist’s ability with formal art training. This bias can be quite discouraging, as it tends to overlook the value of creativity and innovation that comes from non-traditional backgrounds. However, my experiences in technology and business, where I also self-taught, have equipped me with an open and creative mindset. These fields taught me to take risks, think outside the box, and explore beyond conventional boundaries. I applied the same principles to my art, allowing me to push the limits of traditional academic constraints. In my artistic journey, I embraced the freedom that comes with being self-taught. I dream my art without boundaries, letting my imagination guide me. This approach has enabled me to explore and experiment with various techniques and styles, leading to the development of my unique “squeeze and splatter” technique. Art, in its essence, is about expression and creativity. I believe that creativity should not be restrained by academic biases or rigid definitions of what art should be. By staying true to my vision and continuously experimenting, I have been able to overcome the initial skepticism and gain recognition for my work.
Ultimately, being an autodidact artist has allowed me to maintain a fresh and innovative perspective. It has reinforced my belief that art is a universal language, and its beauty lies in its diversity and the freedom to create without boundaries.

Can you share more about the philanthropic aspects of your career? How do you integrate your commitment to philanthropy with your artistic endeavors?

As a sponsor supporting Goducate, my wife and I have woven philanthropy into the fabric of our lives. Our mission extends beyond mere charity—it’s about empowerment, resilience, and nurturing dreams. Building Shelters and Sanctuaries: In the Philippines, we’ve contributed to building shelters and sanctuaries for those in need. These structures aren’t just physical; they’re havens of hope. For impoverished families, a safe roof overhead means more than mere protection—it signifies dignity and possibility. Empowering Farmers: Through livelihood projects, we’ve uplifted struggling farmers. Their calloused hands, weathered by toil, now grasp new techniques. We’ve shared knowledge—seeds of growth—that yield not just crops but also self-sufficiency. The fields bloom, and so do their spirits. Nurturing Youth through Music: In these same communities, children and teenagers face daunting odds. Education eludes some, while others teeter on the precipice of despair. But music—the universal language—became our bridge. We donated instruments—violins, recorders, guitars—and trained young hearts to play. Some found their rhythm, enrolling in college to study music. Others formed bands, serenading at parties and weddings. Music became their livelihood, their compass in a tumultuous sea. Inspired by these journeys, I’ve planned a similar philanthropic endeavor—one that resonates with my own passion: painting. Talented children and youth, their souls ablaze with creativity, will find solace in colors. Through my business acumen, I’ll guide them toward recognition and self-sufficiency. Their canvases will tell stories—of resilience, of dreams unfurling, of hope brushed onto life’s canvas. My art mirrors this journey. Each stroke carries echoes of compassion, resilience, and connection. The pandemic may have grounded us, but our imaginations soared. Just as Goducate’s work transcends borders, my brush dances across continents. Art becomes sanctuary—a passport to places unseen, emotions unspoken. In this fusion of philanthropy and creativity, I find purpose. The canvas whispers: “Paint resilience. Sketch hope. Color connection.” And so, I do—brush by brush, stroke by stroke.

Looking forward, what new directions or projects are you excited to explore in your art? Are there any particular themes or techniques you are eager to experiment with?

As I look to the future, I’m incredibly excited about several new directions and projects in my art. One of the most thrilling areas I’m exploring is the integration of the latest display technologies, such as transparent LED screens and 3D holograms, to create immersive experiences. I’ve already begun animating some of my art pieces, bringing elements like waterfalls to life with the visual and auditory sensation of water splashing down and the roar of gushing water. This fusion of art and technology allows viewers to experience my work in a multi-sensory way, adding depth and dynamism to the visual experience. Additionally, I’m venturing into the realm of sculpture, transforming my two-dimensional art into three-dimensional forms. This exploration opens up new possibilities for expressing movement, texture, and space, allowing my art to engage viewers from different perspectives. Another exciting project involves turning my art into fabrics to create beautiful fashion pieces. I envision my wife and other ladies adorning themselves with wearable art, where each garment tells a story through its vibrant patterns and colors. This project combines my passion for art with the world of fashion, creating a unique intersection where creativity meets everyday life. These new directions not only push the boundaries of my artistic practice but also offer innovative ways for people to connect with and experience art. I’m eager to continue experimenting and discovering new methods to bring my artistic visions to life.

For aspiring artists who may come from non-artistic backgrounds, what advice would you give them about pursuing their passion for art?

Embrace Your Unconventional Path: As a non-traditional artist, you bring a unique perspective to the canvas. Your journey—whether through medicine, technology, or other fields—shapes your art. Embrace it. Your background isn’t a limitation; it’s a palette of experiences waiting to be expressed. Create Despite Constraints: Art can be costly, especially when starting out. Canvas, paints, and studio space—all demand investment. But remember, creativity thrives within constraints. Start small. Use what you have. A corner of your home can be a studio; cardboard can be a canvas. Let scarcity fuel innovation. Market Your Art Like a Business: Picasso and Dali weren’t just masterful painters; they were savvy entrepreneurs. Treat your art as a product. Learn marketing. Social media—especially Instagram—is your ally. Showcase your work, share your process, and connect with fellow artists and collectors. The digital world is your gallery. Art Calls and Contests Matter: Participate. These platforms amplify your voice. Art calls and contests provide exposure, validation, and sometimes even financial rewards. Don’t shy away. Submit your work. Even if you don’t win, your art reaches new eyes. Remember, recognition often snowballs. Balance Creation and Promotion: Yes, focus on creating beautiful art—that’s your core. But allocate time for promotion too. It’s not vanity; it’s survival. Attend exhibitions, collaborate, network. Your brush strokes matter, but so do your words, your presence. Be your own advocate. Learn from the Masters, Adapt to the Present: Study the greats—Picasso, Dali, and beyond. Their techniques, their audacity—they’re timeless. But also adapt. The digital age demands agility. Learn digital tools, explore multimedia, and stay curious. Art evolves; so must you. Remember, your journey isn’t linear; it’s a mosaic. Each piece—whether medicine, technology, or art—adds depth. Your canvas awaits. Paint resilience, color dreams, and let your non-traditional spirit soar.

How has the Singaporean cultural background influenced your artistic vision and themes? Are there specific cultural elements or traditions that inspire your work?

Singapore, like many Asian countries, is deeply influenced by Chinese and Asian heritage and traditional art. This rich cultural tapestry provides a backdrop of history, symbolism, and techniques that are integral to the region’s artistic identity. However, my artistic vision is more aligned with contemporary and abstract art, which I find to be liberating and intoxicating. This style allows for greater freedom of expression and has an international flair that transcends cultural boundaries. My wife often jokes that I was born in the wrong place if I aspire to excel as an international artist, given my preference for modern and abstract forms over traditional styles. While I deeply respect and appreciate the traditional art forms of my heritage, my work is driven by a desire to explore new frontiers and push the boundaries of creativity. The dynamic and ever-evolving nature of contemporary art resonates with my own journey and experiences, allowing me to express complex emotions and ideas in a way that feels unrestricted and authentic. In essence, while my Singaporean cultural background provides a foundation of rich artistic heritage, my inspiration and artistic vision are fueled by the global language of contemporary and abstract art. This blend of influences allows me to create works that are both deeply personal and universally relatable.
